Greece ended a 65-year wait for a victory over Germany, securing a historic 1-0 win in Augsburg on Saturday.

Before the match, Greece had never beaten Germany in 10 previous meetings, losing nine and drawing one. Their breakthrough came in their 11th encounter as Dimitris Kourbelis scored in the 74th minute to give Greece victory.

The result also marked a losing start for new Germany coach Jurgen Klopp in his first home match since taking charge ahead of Euro 2028. Germany had drawn 1-1 with the Netherlands in Klopp’s first game.

Greece absorbed sustained pressure before producing the decisive goal through a swift counterattack. Christos Tzolis created the opening for Kourbelis, who fired a low shot from outside the box. The ball took a deflection off Germany captain Joshua Kimmich and changed direction before finding the net.

Germany dominated possession with 76 per cent and also led in passing, attacks and shots. But they struggled to break down a well-organised Greek defence, with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis making several important saves.

Klopp made five changes to his starting XI and introduced Serge Gnabry, Anton Stach and Henes Behrens after Greece took the lead. Germany continued to attack during the final 15 minutes but failed to find an equaliser.

Greece also had a chance to double their advantage through Fotis Ioannidis, but the forward could not convert.

The victory gives Greece six points from two matches and puts them top of their Nations League group. The Netherlands have four points, while Germany remain third with one point.
