Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam used the bedroom of his NAM Bhaban flat with his first wife, Maksuda Islam, while his second wife, Mariam Khatun, sometimes had to sleep on the adjoining balcony, according to information presented by police in court.
The information emerged during the investigation into a case filed over Mariam’s death. Nazrul was sent to jail on Monday after completing eight days of remand in two phases.
According to the investigating officer, Nazrul told police that he married Mariam, 19, on June 16 following their relationship.
The marriage was later registered and a kabinnama was prepared.
After the marriage, Mariam was allowed to stay with Nazrul and his first wife at the NAM Bhaban flat.
However, investigators said she was not given proper status as a wife and sometimes had to spend the night on the balcony beside the bedroom.
Mariam was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside the flat on September 20. Police later arrested Nazrul and his first wife in connection with a case filed by Mariam’s father, accusing them of abetting her suicide.
At Monday’s hearing, the investigating officer said Nazrul had provided information considered important to the investigation.
The prosecution also claimed that Mariam had been subjected to physical and mental abuse, although the allegation remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Nazrul’s lawyer sought bail, arguing that the case was related to a family dispute and that investigators had not produced evidence establishing his involvement in the alleged abetment.
The court, however, rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
The case follows the death of Mariam at the MP’s NAM Bhaban flat on September 20.
Her death initially raised questions over whether it was suicide or homicide, with police saying at the time that the cause would be determined through investigation and forensic evidence.
