More than 100 people staged a protest in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, on Monday, demanding a fair investigation and justice over the death of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam.
Organised under the banner of Sachetan Nagarik Samaj, the protesters also demanded the maximum punishment, including the death penalty, for the lawmaker. They held a rally outside the Shyamnagar upazila BNP office before bringing out a procession.
Speakers said Mariam’s death must not be covered up and called for an impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. They also demanded legal action against anyone found responsible.
The protesters alleged that Nazrul had misled voters during the election and expressed anger over his conduct and activities. Some participants also called for his removal as an MP and for his parliamentary seat to be declared vacant.
The protest came a day after police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Mariam from a flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka. Her father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case accusing Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and a relative of abetting her suicide. Police have shown Nazrul and his first wife arrested in the case.
The circumstances of Mariam’s death remain under investigation. Police have also sent her body for autopsy and collected evidence from the scene.
