A 23-year-old youth was hacked to death by a group of assailants in Tongi, Gazipur, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Joy, son of Sirajul Islam of the Bank Math slum area in Tongi, was attacked with sharp weapons near Tongi Railway Station around 1am on Monday night, police said.
According to police, Joy was returning home when several youths attacked him and fled the scene.
Locals later informed the Tongi Railway Police outpost, and police recovered his body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
No one had been arrested immediately after the incident.
Police suspect that the killing may have stemmed from a previous enmity and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.
A murder case will be filed with Kamalapur Railway Police Station, said Nur Alam Hossain, in-charge of the Tongi Railway Police outpost.
