President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on China to increase investment in Bangladesh and enhance cooperation in creating conditions for the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas.

He made the call during a meeting with outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at Bangabhaban on Wednesday, according to the President’s Press Wing.

Appreciating China’s constructive role in the Rohingya crisis, the president said greater Chinese initiatives could help resolve the crisis and facilitate sustainable repatriation.

He also urged China to expand cooperation and investment in sectors including ready-made garments, electric vehicles, light engineering, high-tech electronics, semiconductors and solar power.

Welcoming regional connectivity initiatives such as the Kunming-Chattogram corridor and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor, Mirza Fakhrul said Bangladesh was ready to work with China and other partners in their mutual interests.

He described the modernisation and expansion of Mongla Port and the proposed China Economic and Industrial Zone as important initiatives for connectivity, industrialisation and economic development.

The president also urged China to continue its technical and financial assistance for the Teesta River Integrated Management and Restoration Project and called for further discussions to advance its implementation.

Mirza Fakhrul praised Yao Wen’s contribution to strengthening Bangladesh-China relations and expressed hope that ties between the two countries would become stronger and more consolidated in the coming days.
