Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim has said the prosecution has been able to prove all the charges brought against retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan in a crimes against humanity case involving more than 100 alleged enforced disappearances and killings.

He made the remarks while responding to reporters at the International Crimes Tribunal premises in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The tribunal on Wednesday began recording the testimony of investigation officer Md Rafiqul Islam as the 15th prosecution witness. As his testimony remained incomplete, the tribunal scheduled the next hearing for October 4.

Tamim said the investigation officer had given part of his testimony and would complete it on Sunday. His testimony would conclude the prosecution’s presentation of evidence, after which the defence could present its witnesses before the arguments begin.

The prosecutor said the prosecution had presented eyewitness, documentary and circumstantial evidence in support of the charges. Earlier, another prosecution statement said eyewitnesses had been presented for every charge except the alleged abduction of boatman Alkas Mallik.

Tamim said the investigation officer was describing how he conducted the investigation, whose statements he recorded, where he went and what evidence and information he collected.

He also referred to testimony from former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan and other military officers, saying their statements described allegations concerning Ziaul Ahsan’s role and the alleged involvement of RAB officials in such crimes.

Ziaul Ahsan is facing trial before ICT-1 over allegations involving the enforced disappearance and killing of 104 people. The defence has disputed the prosecution’s claims and argued that the evidence does not establish the charges.
