DHAKA: The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Ziaul Haque Jewel, joint general secretary of the Patuakhali district unit of the Awami League and former mayor of Bauphal Municipality, from the Gulshan area of the capital on Wednesday night.
Sources concerned said Jewel was arrested from a house in Baridhara DOHS around 11:30pm and taken to the DB office on Minto Road, according to sources familiar with the matter.
A police official said arrest warrants had been issued against Jewel in several cases. He had been in hiding since August 5, 2024. Following intelligence confirming his whereabouts, a DB team conducted an operation and arrested him, the official said.
However, the DB has not officially confirmed his arrest.
Family members claimed that Jewel was a clean politician and had been elected mayor of Bauphal Municipality several times.
