The Election Commission (EC) has not yet finalised the schedule for the upcoming local government elections but is considering the government’s proposed timeframe of January to June, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Election Building in Dhaka, Ahmed said the commission was taking the government’s suggested timeline into consideration while planning the local polls.
On the possible deployment of military personnel during the elections, he said the decision would depend on the security situation and a future assessment.
The EC secretary also announced a joint initiative with UNESCO to tackle electoral disinformation and rumours.
He said preliminary discussions had been held under UNESCO’s BALLOT project, and specialised training would be arranged for election officials, police personnel and media professionals to help them identify and counter fake news during elections.
