SIRAGANJ: A mobile court has seized 18 sacks of urea fertiliser from the residence of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj and fined him Tk 25,000 for illegally stockpiling the fertiliser.
The mobile court was conducted around 1am on Friday in the Chhoto Dhopakandi area of Bhadra Ghat Union, led by Kamarkhand Assistant Commissioner (Land) Abdullah Al Mamun.
The fined individual, Monirul Islam, is the second Nayeb-e-Ameer of Kamarkhand upazila Jamaat-e-Islami and the son of Abdur Rashid of Dhopakandi village.
According to the mobile court and local sources, several sacks of urea fertiliser were being transported to Monirul Islam’s house in an autorickshaw around 1am. Local residents noticed the incident and informed the upazila executive officer.
Following the instruction of the upazila executive officer, the assistant commissioner (land) conducted a raid at the house. During the operation, 18 sacks of urea, each weighing 50 kilograms, were seized. Authorities said Monirul had collected the fertiliser from a dealer and stored it at his residence.
Abdullah Al Mamun said the fertiliser was seized based on information provided by local residents and handed over to the upazila agriculture officer. Monirul was fined Tk 25,000 for illegally stockpiling the fertiliser.
The seized fertiliser will be sold to farmers in Bhadra Ghat Union at the government-fixed price, officials said.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Farid Hossain, Kamarkhand Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hashmat Ali and members of law enforcement agencies were present during the operation.
Talking to the media, Sirajganj district Jamaat secretary Zahidul Islam said the organisation contacted the administration and learned that Monirul had stored the urea in violation of the law. Following this, an emergency meeting of the district Jamaat was held, and Monirul Islam’s membership was suspended.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami does not support any illegal activities.
