A cargo aircraft carrying uranium fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has departed Russia for Dhaka and is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 11:30pm on Friday, October 2.
Science and Technology Ministry sources said the aircraft will make a stop in India before arriving in Dhaka.
Preparations have been completed to transport the shipment to the Rooppur plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, under tight security.
The shipment was originally scheduled to arrive on September 24, but the flight was cancelled after it could not secure permission to use Pakistani airspace.
The shipment has now been rescheduled via an alternative route.
According to project sources, a total of nine consignments of nuclear fuel will be brought to Bangladesh.
Seven shipments are intended for Unit 2, while two will be used for refuelling Unit 1. Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has said the fuel deliveries will continue through December.
Meanwhile, commissioning work at Unit 1 has made progress, with a high-pressure test of the pressure-operated relief valve successfully completed at 16 megapascals.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, being built in Ishwardi with Russian technical and financial assistance, will have two units with a combined generation capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
