Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan has said officials and employees at all levels of government are servants of the people and urged them to work sincerely for public welfare.
He made the remarks at a discussion on development activities of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) at its auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka, on Friday.
The minister said the elected government is committed to ensuring accountability in its work and is open to constructive criticism. He said any shortcomings in government activities would be addressed if they are properly brought to the authorities’ attention.
However, he urged people not to criticise the government through false information or propaganda, stressing the need for responsible participation to maintain a democratic environment and stability.
“Our common goal should be the welfare of the people and establishing Bangladesh as a developed and respected country in the global community,” he said, urging officials to continue serving people with dedication despite limited resources.
Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said DPHE activities should be guided not only by development projects but also by the needs of people at the grassroots level.
He called for stronger maintenance of existing infrastructure, turning waste into resources and reducing dependence on groundwater through long-term planning.
He also stressed the need for dedicated funds and adequate allocations for regular maintenance of DPHE facilities at the field level.
For major cities, he proposed initiatives to generate energy from waste, while calling for low-cost waste-management systems in smaller municipalities and upazilas.
The state minister also emphasised expanding safe-water supplies through the treatment of river and pond water to reduce pressure on groundwater resources.
Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, DPHE Chief Engineer Md Zamanur Rahman and senior officials of the ministry and department attended the meeting.
