At least 12 pilgrims were killed and several others injured after an out-of-control truck ran over devotees near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, early Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 1:30am when a truck loaded with paddy reportedly broke through police barricades on a steep road and crashed into the temple’s outer wall and gate, crushing pilgrims gathered nearby.

According to local authorities, 39 people were taken to hospital, including the deceased. Five to six injured people were reported to be in critical condition.

Two police personnel on duty were also injured.

Authorities have launched an investigation into how the truck breached the barricades and are examining the vehicle to determine the cause of the accident.
