Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam has said that Major (retd) Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman is not a leader of the party but only a primary member.
Speaking at a press conference at the party office in Rangpur on Saturday, Azharul alleged that Akhtaruzzaman was being portrayed as a Jamaat leader to mislead the public.
“Akhtaruzzaman is not a Jamaat leader. He is a primary or associate member,” Azharul said, explaining that members progress through different stages before becoming party leaders.
He also criticised the arrest of Akhtaruzzaman, saying he was arrested over his protest at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before the allegations against him had been properly investigated.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch from his residence in Dhaka on Friday after a case was filed over alleged disorder at the airport, obstruction of government work and assaulting a security official.
A court later granted him one day’s remand. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Recent reports have described Akhtaruzzaman as having joined Jamaat before the 13th parliamentary election, while Jamaat has also demanded his unconditional release.
