NBR raids four Dhaka establishments, including Fu-Wang

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) conducted coordinated raids at four bars and restaurants in Dhaka on Saturday over allegations of illegal sourcing of alcohol and evasion of customs duty, VAT and income tax.

Fu-Wang Bowling and Services Limited, owned by Sheikh Nur Islam, father-in-law of content creator Salman Muqtadir, was among the establishments targeted in the operation.

The other three were Raw Canvas Restaurant, Habib Hotel International and Margarita Lounge.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the operation was launched following allegations that some bars, restaurants, diplomatic bonded warehouses and duty-free shops were obtaining alcohol and alcohol-based products from illegal sources, evading applicable taxes and supplying the products to unauthorised customers.

The CIID formed four teams to conduct the operation, with officials from several NBR agencies, including the Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit, Central Intelligence Cell, VAT Intelligence and the Dhaka North Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate.

Officials inspected the establishments, searched their premises and checked relevant documents.

They were also verifying the quantity and legal sources of alcohol products in stock, import and purchase documents, and payment of applicable duties and taxes.

The latest raids came days after a joint operation at four warehouses of Toss Bond Private Ltd in South Gulshan, where duty-free liquor was allegedly stored in two unauthorised warehouses. The warehouses were subsequently sealed.

Fu-Wang authorities, however, have denied claims that Toss Bond is connected to Sheikh Nur Islam or his family, describing such reports as false and fabricated.
