Bangladesh was jolted by three earthquakes within about 75 minutes late Saturday night and early Sunday, with another tremor reported in the early hours of the morning.
The first earthquake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck the Myanmar-Bangladesh border area at 12:12am on Sunday, according to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Tremors were felt in areas near the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf border and in Chattogram.
Just one minute later, at around 12:13am, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit the Lunglei area of India’s Mizoram along the Bangladesh-India border.
The tremor was felt in Chattogram, Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali and other parts of the country.
A third earthquake occurred at 1:27am, when a magnitude 3.8 tremor struck the Agartala/Tripura region of India. Mild shaking was reported in Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh. India’s National Centre for Seismology also recorded a magnitude 3.8 earthquake in Tripura’s Dhalai area.
The tremors were followed by another earthquake in the early morning.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred at around 4:00am, with its epicentre about 443 kilometres from Dhaka.
Details about the location and any possible impact were not immediately available.
The successive earthquakes caused concern among residents in several parts of the country, particularly after the tremors were felt repeatedly within a short period.
However, no immediate reports of casualties or major damage were available following the overnight tremors.
The latest series of earthquakes comes amid several seismic events recorded around Bangladesh and neighbouring regions in recent days.
