A deputy assistant director of the Special Response Battalion (SRB) was killed after a truck crashed into an SRB vehicle while he was on duty at a checkpoint on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Feni.
The accident occurred around 1am on Sunday near the Fatehpur Star Line Filling Station in the Feni bypass area.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, 46, who was serving at SRB-7’s Feni camp on deputation from the Bangladesh Army. He was the son of the late Nuruddin Ahmed of Shantabag village in Kendua upazila of Netrakona.
According to police, SRB members had set up a temporary checkpoint based on a tip-off and were searching vehicles. Alamgir and several colleagues were searching a covered van when they signalled another truck to stop.
The truck driver allegedly tried to flee by turning the vehicle on the highway. During the attempt, the truck collided with the covered van, leaving Alamgir critically injured.
His body suffered severe crush injuries in several places. Colleagues rescued him and took him to Feni General Hospital, where an emergency department doctor declared him dead after examination.
Police detained the injured truck driver, identified as Sajib, who is receiving treatment under SRB custody. He is the son of Salam Gazi of Shyampur village in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal.
Mahipal Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain said Alamgir was taken to hospital after being rescued, but doctors declared him dead following examination.
