Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 9,000 kilograms of Indian cumin from a truck in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj, allegedly being smuggled toward Dhaka using forged customs documents.
The seized cumin and the truck were estimated to be worth around Tk 11.3 million, according to a press release issued by BGB Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) on Monday night (October 5).
Acting on information that a large consignment of Indian cumin would be transported to Dhaka through the border area, BGB set up a special checkpoint at the Muktijuddho Chattar on the old Dhaka-Sylhet highway at around 11am on Sunday (October 4).
At one point, the driver reportedly abandoned the truck and fled after noticing the presence of BGB personnel about 500 yards from the checkpoint.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 300 sacks containing 9,000kg of Indian cumin, BGB said.
According to the border force, the consignment was allegedly being transported using forged customs documents in an attempt to make the shipment appear legitimate.
BGB said further legal action would be taken over the seizure and the suspected smuggling operation.
