A cross-party delegation of British parliamentarians has arrived in Dhaka for a week-long visit to strengthen parliamentary ties and discuss issues including democratic governance, accountability, human rights and the Rohingya crisis.

The delegation, organised by the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh, is led by APPG Chair Apsana Begum MP of the Labour Party and comprises Lord Qurban Hussain of the Liberal Democrats and independent MP Shockat Adam.

On October 6, the delegation met Bangladesh Parliament Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal MP at the Parliament.

Since arriving in Dhaka, the delegation has also met British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and held discussions with senior ministers.

During their week-long visit, the British lawmakers are expected to hold a series of high-level meetings focusing on parliamentary practice, oversight, scrutiny and representation.

They will also visit various sites and meet representatives of civil society organisations and international non-governmental organisations.

The discussions are expected to cover parliamentary democracy, women’s participation in public and political life, human rights, public accountability, climate change, security and the Rohingya refugee crisis.

The delegation is being supported by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK).
