1,106 detained in Noakhali anti-teen gang drive

NOAKHALI: Police have detained 1,106 people in an anti-teen gang drive across 10 police stations in Noakhali.

Of them, 85 people have faced legal action under various laws, while the remaining 1,021 were handed over to their families after taking written undertakings.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Abu Tayeb Md Arif Hossain confirmed the information on Thursday (October 8).

According to police, the drive was conducted under the direction and supervision of Noakhali Superintendent of Police NM Nasiruddin to curb the activities of teen gangs, prevent youths from becoming involved in crime and ensure public safety.

The operation was carried out in different police station areas across the district from September 27 to October 6.

Among those detained, three faced action under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 53 were prosecuted under Section 34, seven were arrested in regular cases, 13 in previous cases and two on the basis of previous warrants.

Besides, one person was arrested under Section 151, two were sent to court for summary trials and four were sentenced through mobile courts.

By police station, Hathia recorded the highest number of detentions at 289, followed by Begumganj with 183, Companiganj 131, Sudharam Model 125, Char Jabbar 110, Sonaimuri 92, Kabirhat 60, Chatkhil 59 and Senbagh 57.

Abu Tayeb Md Arif Hossain said the drive would continue to curb teen gang-related crime. Awareness programmes would also be conducted in coordination with parents, educational institutions, local representatives and people from all sections of society.
