NOAKHALI: At least two people were injured when two groups clashed on the premises of Companiganj Police Station in Noakhali while attempting to resolve a dispute. Police quickly brought the situation under control and detained five people in connection with the incident.
The clash took place around 9 p.m. on Monday, October 26.
The detainees were identified as Md. Ala Uddin alias Sohel, Imtiaz Chowdhury, Md. Azgar Ali, Jahidul Islam Sabbir and Main Uddin.
According to police and local sources, Sohel, an expatriate worker from Char Chhotodhali village in Ward No. 5 of Musapur Union under Companiganj Upazila, married Mashrupa Akter, 19, of Lamchi Prasad village in Ward No. 1 of Dhanshalik Union under Kabirhat Upazila, about a year ago through a marriage arranged over the phone.
Sohel returned to Bangladesh about three months ago. Following his return, marital disputes reportedly developed between the couple over various issues.
Sources said representatives of both sides went to the police station around 9 p.m. on Monday following a complaint related to the dispute. Sub-Inspector Joydas Gupta, the investigating officer at Companiganj Police Station, advised both parties to resolve the matter locally.
Later that night, as the two groups were leaving the station, they became involved in a heated argument on the road near the police station gate. The argument eventually escalated into a physical clash, leaving at least two people injured.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Habibur Rahman said the groups got into a fight while leaving after a family meeting.
Police immediately detained five people from both sides, he added.
The process of filing a case is underway. The detainees will be formally shown as arrested in the case and produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, the OC said.
