Police have detained a madrasah superintendent accused of raping several students in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, while three police personnel, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, were injured in an attack by an angry mob.
The accused, Ashiqullah, 40, is the muhtamim (superintendent) of Markazul Madrasa in the Malithapara area of Khalishakundi union. He is the son of late Qari Enamullah of Jamdia village in Bagherpara upazila of Jashore.
The injured police personnel were identified as OC Khaledur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Nazrul Islam and Constable Azam Hossain. They received primary treatment at Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex.
According to local residents and relatives of the alleged victims, several students were sexually assaulted by the accused on different occasions.
The allegations came to light on Thursday, prompting relatives of the students and local residents to gather at the madrasah around noon. They reportedly confined and assaulted the accused before police arrived to bring the situation under control and rescue him.
During the operation, the crowd attacked the police, injuring the three officers and damaging a police pickup vehicle.
OC Khaledur Rahman said police rescued Ashiqullah from the crowd and took him into custody.
He added that legal action would be taken following an investigation if written complaints were submitted by the victims’ families.
