Ten people were killed and 16 others injured in a clash at a prison in Mexico’s Sinaloa state on Thursday, local authorities said.

The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat confirmed the violence in a post on social media platform X but did not provide details about what triggered the clash.

Security personnel were deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control. An AFP reporter saw an armoured vehicle and ambulances arriving at the scene.

Sinaloa Public Security Secretary Sinuhe Tellez said in a video message posted on social media that nine inmates and a teenage visitor were killed. The 16 injured were all prisoners, he added.

Located in north-western Mexico, Sinaloa has become a major hotspot for clashes between rival factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

The US State Department has advised American citizens against travelling to Sinaloa, one of six Mexican states subject to such warnings because of security risks.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the cause of the prison violence.
