Forensic tests have detected DNA matching two arrested neighbours in evidence collected from the scene of the murder of four members of a family, including retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, in Machhuapara, Rangpur city.
Rangpur Detective Branch (DB) Superintendent of Police Sumit Chowdhury confirmed the development, describing it as a significant breakthrough in the investigation.
He said investigators collected more than 35 types of evidence from the scene, including cigarette butts, partially eaten dates and cucumber, a fruit-cutting knife, equipment used for consuming yaba, and samples from a washbasin near bloodstains.
The items were sent to laboratories in several batches for scientific and forensic examination.
The final report found that samples from cigarette butts, dates and cucumber collected at the scene contained DNA matching that of the two arrested suspects, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das.
Investigators believe the forensic findings could provide important evidence regarding the suspects’ presence at the scene.
On the night of August 22, police recovered the bloodied bodies of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, daughter Agami Chakraborty and son Priyam Chakraborty from their home in Machhuapara.
The killings sparked widespread shock across the country. The following day, Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of Ganapati, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station against unidentified individuals.
During the investigation, police arrested the two neighbours, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, as suspects.
The Detective Branch is now advancing the investigation based on the forensic findings and other evidence collected in the case.
