50 die of dengue in first nine days of Oct

DHAKA: One more person has died of dengue in Bangladesh, bringing the death toll for the first nine days of October to 50 and the total fatalities this year to 295.

The information was available on the dengue dashboard of the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday (October 9).

A total of 1,300 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, taking the number of hospitalisations this year to 95,451.

According to the DGHS, the latest victim was a boy aged between zero and five years.

An analysis of the fatalities showed that women accounted for 51.9% of the 295 deaths, while men accounted for 48.1%.

Monthly figures show that two people died of dengue each in January and February, none in March and April, one in May and 13 in June. The situation subsequently deteriorated, with 36 deaths in July and 43 in August.

The situation worsened further in September, when 148 people died of the disease. So far in October, 50 deaths have been reported, with the highest daily toll of 10 recorded on October 6.

In Dhaka Division, 80 people died at hospitals under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 35 at hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 17 at hospitals outside the city corporations.

Meanwhile, 60 people died in Khulna, 25 each in Chattogram and Barishal, 23 in Mymensingh, 21 in Rajshahi, six in Rangpur and three in Sylhet.

Monthly hospitalisation figures show that 15,831 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in October so far, compared with 43,774 in September.

Earlier, 1,081 patients were hospitalised in January, 409 in February, 353 in March, 640 in April, 714 in May, 2,907 in June, 9,206 in July and 20,536 in August.

Of the total patients hospitalised this year, 89,380 have been discharged.
