Police have recovered the bullet-riddled body of a 25-year-old Bangladeshi man from a border area in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet.

The body of Shahin Ahmed was recovered on Saturday afternoon from farmland in Sonarkheor village near border pillar No. 1328 in Laxmiprasad Purba union.

Shahin was the son of Abdul Latif of Keuti Haor village. His elder brother, Jasim Uddin, said Shahin worked as a day labourer and leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

According to locals, Shahin left home on Friday night but did not return. At around 10am on Saturday, residents found his bullet-riddled body lying in farmland on the Bangladesh side of the border and informed his family.

Jasim later informed Kanaighat Police Station, and police went to the scene and recovered the body.

Locals suspect Shahin may have attempted to cross into India on Friday night, when he could have been shot by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) or members of the Khasi community. However, the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established.

Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said the body had a gunshot wound to the back.

“After receiving the information, we recovered Shahin Ahmed’s body from the Sonarkheor border area. The matter is under investigation,” he said, adding that the body would be handed over to his family after an autopsy.
