The government will form a committee led by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to review admission opportunities for English-medium students at public universities, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Sunday.
The committee will examine admission arrangements for students who follow foreign curricula and hold O- and A-level qualifications, with a view to ensuring equal opportunities in higher education.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the Alliance of Private English Medium Schools in Dhaka, the minister said the government would formulate a policy based on the committee’s recommendations.
Citing India and Pakistan, Milon said the two neighbouring countries had clear guidelines for recognising O- and A-level qualifications as equivalent to their respective higher secondary education certificates.
He said Bangladesh was also working to establish equivalence across different levels of education.
The minister also stressed the need to strengthen the teaching of Bangladesh’s history, Bangla language and culture in English-medium schools.
