Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is closely monitoring the situation of Bangladeshi nationals affected by a missile attack at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which has reportedly killed 12 people, including two Bangladeshis.
Several others were injured and are receiving treatment at hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The exact casualty figures have yet to be confirmed, according to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh is maintaining contact with Saudi authorities to gather information about the victims and the missing persons.
A foreign ministry official said Bangladeshi nationals who remained unharmed after the attack had been moved to two hotels. The prime minister is being kept updated on the situation, the official added.
According to sources, a group of 41 Bangladeshi Umrah pilgrims had been waiting at Riyadh airport to travel to Jeddah when an explosion rocked the airport building.
Two Bangladeshi nationals have so far been identified among the dead, but their identities were not immediately available. Eleven people remain missing, raising concerns that the casualty toll could increase.
The pilgrims were reportedly teachers at Jamia Arabia Rabiu Ul Ulum, a madrasa in Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area.
