LAKSHIMPUR: A 65-year-old van driver was killed after being run over by a sand-laden dump truck on the Lakshmipur–Maju Chowdhury Hat road on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam, son of the late Anu Mia, from Shakchar area in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.

Following the accident, angry locals blocked the road for an hour by placing tree trunks on it. They withdrew the blockade after police arrived and assured them that justice would be served.

According to eyewitnesses, Abul Kalam left home with his van on Monday morning. As he entered the Lakshmipur–Maju Chowdhury Hat road, a sand-laden dump truck coming from the opposite direction ran him over, killing him on the spot.

The truck driver allegedly tried to flee with the vehicle, but locals managed to seize the truck. Protesters subsequently blocked the road by placing tree trunks on it.

Officer-in-Charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station Md Wahid Parvez confirmed the incident, saying the dump truck had been seized.

“The body was recovered and sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The situation is now normal,” he said.
