Jantar Mantar, a prominent protest site in New Delhi’s Lutyens’ area, has been removed from the list of designated venues for demonstrations and public protests, Delhi Police said on Monday.

In a notice issued on October 12, the police announced three alternative locations for organising protests and public gatherings across the Indian capital.

According to the notice, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs had formed a committee to identify suitable alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to protest and demonstrate. The decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the designated list was taken based on the committee’s recommendations.

The three newly designated venues are Ramlila Maidan, Burari Maidan and CBD Maidan in Shahdara, the police notice said.

Detailed and revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing protests and public gatherings at the three locations will be issued separately, it added.

Among the newly designated venues, Ramlila Maidan is the closest to Lutyens’ Delhi, located around four kilometres from Jantar Mantar. The historic ground has long been associated with major protests and political movements in India.

Burari Maidan is approximately 18 kilometres from Jantar Mantar, while CBD Maidan in Shahdara is more than 12 kilometres away.

The change relocates authorised protest activities from a central Delhi site to three alternative venues spread across the city.
