The Election Commission (EC) will begin printing smart national identity (NID) cards at full capacity at its Personalisation Centre from mid-November, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said on Monday.

He made the disclosure at a briefing following an EC meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Building in Agargaon.

Regarding the activities of the National Identity Registration Wing, Sanaullah said an initial discussion had been held on enhancing the administrative and financial powers of its officials. A special committee will finalise the matter later.

He said the commission was also taking prompt steps to accelerate smart card printing, settle audit objections and resolve other administrative complications.

The EC has also taken an initiative to simplify and speed up the removal of deceased voters’ names from the voter list.

Sanaullah said the existing process often faced delays because of late information from family members and other sources, preventing timely updates to the voter list.

To modernise the process, the commission will launch a pilot project in selected upazilas and unions to collect information from alternative sources and update the voter list more quickly.

If the pilot proves successful, the initiative will gradually be expanded to all upazilas across the country, he added.

Meanwhile, the commission remains firm on its earlier decision not to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the next election.

Sanaullah said the relevant committee had been instructed to take necessary steps to dispose of the unused EVMs.

The commission will work to resolve related legal complications and issues involving the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) quickly to facilitate their final disposal, he added.
