The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has ordered former education minister and former lawmaker Nurul Islam Nahid and his wife, K U Zohra Jasmine, to submit statements of their assets following a preliminary inquiry into wealth allegedly inconsistent with their known sources of income.

ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Aktarul Islam disclosed the development to journalists on Monday (October 12).

According to the ACC, its preliminary inquiry found assets worth Tk 1,10,53,878 in Nahid’s name that were inconsistent with his known sources of income.

The inquiry also identified assets worth Tk 6,09,734 in the name of his wife, K U Zohra Jasmine, allegedly beyond her known sources of income.

The total value of the assets identified as inconsistent with the couple’s known sources of income stands at Tk 1,16,63,612.

The ACC said the wealth statements would help establish the actual extent of assets held by the couple, including properties acquired in their names or through others, the sources and methods of acquisition, and the amount of wealth exceeding their known sources of income.

The notices have been issued under Section 26(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

The findings are preliminary and do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing.
