Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has invited leaders of the INDIA alliance, opposition MPs, student organisations and civil society representatives to a tea meeting at his residence on Tuesday.

In an Instagram post, the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha said he had invited the opposition leaders to join a gathering as part of their collective movement to protect democracy.

“We are united in this mass movement to protect democracy, and this movement will continue,” he wrote.

Rahul also said opposition leaders would speak to the media after the meeting.

The gathering comes amid opposition demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have raised concerns over several decisions and actions of the Election Commission of India.

Their demands intensified following a report by The Indian Express alleging that not all election commissioners were informed of certain decisions taken during last year’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The report also said two election commissioners had opposed some of those decisions.

Rahul’s tea meeting is being viewed as an effort to strengthen coordination among opposition parties amid their protests over the SIR process and the Election Commission’s role.

The outcome of the meeting and the opposition’s next course of action are expected to become clearer after the leaders address the media.
