Mahanagar Express will start operating on the Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route from October 26, allowing passengers at several intermediate stations to travel directly to the country’s major tourist destination by train for the first time.
Mohammad Shafiqul Rahman, chief operating superintendent of Bangladesh Railway’s eastern zone, said on Wednesday that preparations were underway to launch the extended service on the scheduled date.
The train currently operates between Dhaka and Chattogram. Unlike Cox’s Bazar Express and Tourist Express, which run without intermediate stops on the route, Mahanagar Express will stop at several stations along the way.
Passengers from Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla and Feni, who previously could not board the direct trains to Cox’s Bazar from these stations, will be able to reach the tourist city without changing trains.
Under the revised schedule, train No. 722 will leave Dhaka at 8:30 pm and arrive in Cox’s Bazar at 6:00 am the following day.
In the return direction, train No. 721 will depart Cox’s Bazar at 8:00 am, reach Chattogram at 12:20 pm and arrive in Dhaka at 6:30 pm.
The train will stop at Narsingdi, Bhairab Bazar, Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, Akhaura, Kasba, Cumilla, Laksam, Nangalkot and Feni stations.
Passengers will be able to travel in Shovon Chair, Snigdha, AC Seat and AC Berth classes.
Currently, Cox’s Bazar Express and Tourist Express operate between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar, while Saikat Express and Prabal Express provide regular services between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
Shafiqul Rahman said Mahanagar Express would no longer stop at Kumira station under the revised schedule.
