A clash broke out between two factions of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Cumilla over the election of the party’s city unit Ameer on Wednesday evening, leaving a car vandalised and a cocktail explosion reported at the party office.
The incident took place around 7pm at the Jamaat-e-Islami city office in Mogoltuli, Cumilla. Police from Kotwali Model Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Party sources said differences among senior leaders had been brewing for several days over the formation of a new city committee.
Tensions reportedly escalated during a meeting on Wednesday amid speculation that incumbent city unit Secretary Mahbubur Rahman could become the new Ameer.
At one stage, a faction allegedly vandalised Mahbubur Rahman’s car.
A cocktail also exploded on the roof of the party office.
Jamaat’s assistant general secretary Nasir Uddin and its Dawah and Information Secretary Hossain, along with several others, were accused of involvement in the vandalism and explosion.
However, their responses to the allegations could not be obtained.
Cumilla city unit Assistant Secretary Mosharraf Hossain described the incident as an internal matter, saying the party would brief the media while a meeting was still underway.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidul Anwar said police were deployed at the scene after receiving information about the incident.
No casualties had been reported, he added.
The party’s senior leaders were inside the office as police monitored the situation.
