India expects Bangladesh to take steps to address concerns over alleged attacks on religious minorities, including Hindus, in the country, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a regular media briefing in New Delhi on October 14, Jaiswal said India expected the Bangladesh government to resolve the issues.

The remarks came in response to a question about allegations raised by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council regarding attacks, killings and communal tensions ahead of Durga Puja.

The council claimed that incidents of violence against minorities had occurred between July and September, including killings, sexual assaults, attacks on temples, property seizures and vandalism.

It also alleged that efforts to spread communal tension and hurt religious sentiments were continuing.

Separately, Jaiswal said representatives from Bangladesh and other member states attended the inaugural BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.

He said the meeting adopted the Delhi Declaration, with member states pledging to strengthen cooperation in counterterrorism, combating drug trafficking and preventing money laundering.

Jaiswal expressed hope that the dialogue would strengthen security cooperation among BIMSTEC members, including Bangladesh.
