A blanket of fog covered Nilphamari from midnight, blurring distant roads and leaving dew on grass as chilly winds offered an early hint of winter in the northern district.

The fog gradually lifted as sunlight intensified, revealing the changing weather patterns across the northern region.

Locals said this was the first significant fog of the current season, following a gradual decline in nighttime temperatures over the past few days. Fog and morning dew have added to the feeling that winter is approaching.

School students Sadik and Jihad said they enjoyed watching the morning fog despite the cold weather not having fully set in.

“The fog in the morning looks beautiful. We are getting up early to enjoy it, and it feels great,” they said, adding that the fog usually persists until around 7:30am to 8:00am before visibility improves.

Meanwhile, farmers in different parts of the district have started cultivating early-season potatoes and winter vegetables. Some have already begun planting potato seeds.

Hamidul Rahman, an early-season potato grower, said he planned to cultivate potatoes on eight bighas of land and had already planted them on three bighas.

“If the weather remains favourable, we hope to make a profit. But rainfall could cause the potato seeds to rot, resulting in substantial financial losses,” he said.

Ayub Ali, an official at the Saidpur Meteorological Office, said the early signs of winter were becoming noticeable, but it was too early to say whether winter would set in fully in October.
