DHAHA: As the southwest monsoon withdraws from the country, rainfall is gradually declining, while a chill in the northern breeze signals the approaching winter. In northern districts such as Panchagarh and Thakurgaon, a slight chill can already be felt in the early morning air. Even Dhaka is experiencing a gentle touch of northerly winds. However, residents of the capital will have to wait a little longer to experience the full force of winter.

Although the biting cold of winter may not arrive until the Bengali month of Poush, the weather is expected to begin changing noticeably by mid-Agrahayan. This means winter’s presence will be felt across Dhaka and most parts of the country from late November. Temperatures will gradually fall, with December expected to bring a spell of intense cold across the country.

Abul Kalam Mallik, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, shared the forecast on Friday (October 16).

He said fluctuations in temperature could cause weather conditions to feel different across various regions. While daytime temperatures may still feel warm, mornings and nights could be relatively cooler.

According to Mallik, mild winter conditions may emerge around mid-November, towards the end of autumn. Winter will set in fully from December. He added that the effects of El Niño could make the winter feel less severe this year.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque, analysing weather patterns over the past four to five years, said winter conditions could persist until February this year. During this period, temperatures in Dhaka could drop to between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius.

Daytime temperatures may begin rising again after mid-February, he added.
