The government is working to transform the Bangladesh Post Office into a modern, public-friendly and profitable institution, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said on Thursday.
He made the remarks while addressing a programme marking World Post Day 2026 at the Dak Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, where he unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and distributed awards.
The minister said public confidence in postal services was growing, with parcel services making positive progress. He urged officials and employees to maintain the momentum through sincerity, dedication and collective efforts.
Foreign investors are interested in investing in the postal department, he said, expressing optimism that the organisation’s service quality, revenue and operational capacity would improve further.
Regarding mobile financial service Nagad, the minister said the government had no immediate plan to sell the company. Instead, initiatives were being taken to make it more modern and profitable.
On the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, he said local and foreign experts were working to bring the project into operation. The government was conducting the necessary tests and assessments before supplying electricity to the national grid, he added.
The minister stressed the importance of recognising employees’ contributions, saying performance-based awards encouraged them to work better. He also called for greater attention to evaluating the performance of post offices and employees at the grassroots level.
Speaking as a special guest, Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi said the country’s extensive post office network and existing infrastructure should be used to provide modern, technology-driven and public-friendly services.
She said initiatives were underway to reform and transform postal services, coordinate activities with land service assistance centres and expand the department’s franchise operations. These measures would help bring services closer to people’s doorsteps and create new employment opportunities, she added.
Rimi also called for greater use of social media to promote postal services and stressed the need to encourage new talent to participate in future award programmes.
This year’s World Post Day theme is “Integrated Postal Network, Boundless Possibilities.” Following the observance of World Post Day on October 9, Postal Service Week is being celebrated across the country from October 9 to 15.
As part of the celebrations, a commemorative postage stamp highlighting this year’s theme was unveiled on Thursday.
Various programmes, including letter-writing festivals, philatelic exhibitions, essay and art competitions, and discussion sessions, were organised in Dhaka and elsewhere across the country.
Letter-writing festivals, stamp exhibitions and postal service fairs were held at 26 locations, including 25 universities and colleges and Cox’s Bazar beach. A total of 4,643 letters were issued at the festivals, helping promote handwritten correspondence among young people.
At Thursday’s programme, 29 people received special recognition for their contributions to postal services. They included five students who won essay and art competitions, three winners of the 55th International Letter-Writing Competition, four employees recognised for their contributions to postal ballot operations, six employees for outstanding performance in letter-post services and five officers for their contributions to postal services.
Six representatives from Nagad’s distributor, agent and service categories were also recognised.
The initiatives are expected to help expand postal services, improve service quality and strengthen public engagement, officials said.
Director General of the Department of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam chaired the programme, which was attended by officials and employees of the department.
