At least 10 students have died from Ebola in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), as the country continues to battle a worsening outbreak of the deadly virus.

According to education officials, 25 Ebola cases have been confirmed among students at several schools in Ituri province.

Of those infected, 10 have died, while seven others are receiving treatment at specialised Ebola centres.

The deaths come more than a month after schools reopened for the new academic year, raising concerns about the spread of the virus among schoolchildren.

Yvon Muke, the provincial education officer, urged schools to strengthen preventive measures to limit transmission.

The government, with support from international partners, is distributing disinfectants and protective equipment to students and school staff.

Muke also stressed the importance of following health guidelines and ensuring the proper use of protective materials.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the outbreak continues to spread geographically, with rising infections and fatalities. Ituri remains the epicentre of the outbreak, while several other provinces have also reported cases.

The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has become one of the deadliest in the country’s history, putting further pressure on health authorities to strengthen surveillance, treatment and prevention efforts.

Authorities are working to contain the spread of the virus, particularly in schools and other vulnerable communities.
