Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has enquired about the health and well-being of nurse Ripa Francisco Gomez, who was shot during the July 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh.
Tarique, also the chief patron of ‘Amra BNP Paribar’, came across a documentary about Ripa on social media and instructed his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon to look into her situation.
Following the instruction, a delegation led by Amra BNP Paribar Member Secretary Krishibid Moksedul Momin Mithun visited Ripa’s residence in Bazar Goli, Madhya Badda, in the capital at around 11:30 am on Friday.
The delegation enquired about her overall physical condition and conveyed a message of sympathy from the prime minister.
Amra BNP Paribar members Masud Rana Liton, Farhad Ali Sajib and Rubel Amin, along with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Abdullah Al Misbah, were among others present during the visit.
Ripa was shot on July 21, 2024, near Rampura Bridge in Dhaka while providing first aid to people injured during the uprising.
She sustained serious injuries from 47 lead pellets and two rubber bullets. The most severe injury was to her right eye socket, while a bullet became lodged 14 centimetres deep inside her brain.
Since being shot, Ripa has suffered from vision complications and various other physical problems.
She faces financial difficulties due to the cost of regular medical treatment and limited employment opportunities resulting from her physical condition. Despite her injuries, she is trying to earn a living by caring for other patients to cover her own medical expenses.
