Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has dissolved its Cumilla city committee following a clash between rival factions at the party’s city office on October 14.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council at its central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Thursday evening.

The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, according to a press release issued on Friday.

The party said its Cumilla city unit would now operate under direct central supervision. Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim has been assigned to oversee the unit’s activities on behalf of the central organisation.

Jamaat has also formed a two-member committee to investigate the October 14 incident.

The committee comprises Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam and Assistant Secretary General Maulana Muhammad Shahjahan.

The committee has been asked to submit its report to the party chief within a week.

The Central Executive Council will decide on further action after reviewing the findings.

The clash reportedly erupted amid disagreements between rival groups over the formation of a new city committee and the selection of its next ameer.

During the incident, a vehicle belonging to the city unit’s secretary, Mahabubur Rahman, was vandalised. Reports also said a cocktail bomb exploded at the party office.

The dissolution of the committee marks a major organisational move by the party to address the internal dispute.
