Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the administration and BNP leaders and activists across the country to extend all possible support to people affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.
Throughout Friday, the Prime Minister spoke with Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Civil Surgeons of several flood-hit districts to assess the overall situation, Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said.
He also held discussions with ministers, secretaries and senior officials of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and other relevant ministries to review the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister instructed authorities to ensure that rescue, relief, medical assistance and rehabilitation activities are carried out in a coordinated and effective manner.
To strengthen the government’s response, Tarique Rahman assigned State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit to coordinate overall operations, including rescue, rehabilitation and healthcare services in the flood-affected districts.
The state minister is scheduled to visit Chattogram on Saturday along with State Minister for Relief M. Iqbal Hossain and other concerned officials to oversee the situation on the ground.
According to Ruman, officials informed the Prime Minister that floodwaters had started receding in several areas, although the overall situation remains under close observation.
The Prime Minister also directed authorities to give special priority to women, children and pregnant women in the affected areas to ensure they receive necessary assistance.
He instructed law enforcement agencies to remain on maximum alert to prevent criminal groups from taking advantage of the disaster through theft, robbery or other unlawful activities.
The Prime Minister further ordered the authorities to ensure an uninterrupted supply of food, safe drinking water, medical treatment and other emergency assistance for flood victims.
Meanwhile, ministers and members of parliament from the greater Chattogram region have continued to monitor the flood situation and remain actively engaged in relief operations and the distribution of emergency assistance.
