Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia on Sunday, October 18, in one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, targeting oil facilities, a logistics centre and a data centre in and around St Petersburg.

The strikes sparked fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchi oil depot, killing one person and injuring five others, according to local authorities.

A logistics centre operated by Russian retailer Ozon and a data centre run by technology company VK were also targeted.

Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that its forces had shot down 1,015 Ukrainian drones across 15 Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea.

The attack came amid escalating tensions between Ukraine and the United States over strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out 76 attacks on Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas infrastructure over the past week, despite a proposed energy ceasefire.
