A 23-year-old woman and her two young children were found dead at their home in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur on Sunday evening, with police suspecting that the children were strangled before the woman died by suicide.
The incident occurred around 6:30pm in Balupara village of Mostafapur, under Amarpur Union.
The deceased were identified as Swarna Akter, 23, wife of Shakil Hossain, and their two children—Safaayet Hossain, 4, and Raisa Akter, 2.
According to police, who cited local residents, Shakil works as a rickshaw puller and reportedly had frequent disputes with his wife over alleged drug addiction. A similar altercation reportedly took place on Sunday afternoon.
Local residents said that after Shakil and other family members left for the market, Swarna allegedly strangled the children before hanging herself with a scarf from a ceiling beam.
Local representatives and residents suggested that marital discord and alleged domestic abuse may have contributed to the incident. However, the circumstances and motive have yet to be established.
Chirirbandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmud-un-Nabi confirmed the incident, saying he had visited the scene and that further details would be provided after the circumstances were examined.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Anwar Hossain said the bodies would undergo autopsies and that an investigation had begun to determine the actual cause of the deaths.
