DHAKA: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formally inaugurated the newly built July Memorial at the historic Osmani Udyan in the capital.

The prime minister inaugurated the renovated park and the newly constructed July Memorial on Monday (October 19) at 10am. After the inauguration, he planted a sapling on the memorial premises.

Following extensive renovation, the historic Osmani Udyan was reopened to city residents after a long period. The park development project, costing around Tk 50 crore, includes a lake, fountains, a modern library, a cafeteria, walking paths and a children’s recreation area, among other facilities. The park will be opened to the public after the prime minister’s inauguration ceremony.

The park’s main entrance is opposite the Police Headquarters. Visitors entering through the gate will find a lake on the left, a fountain in the middle, and a modern library, gymnasium and cafeteria within the premises. A space for an underground museum has also been developed, accessible by stairs on the left just before the library.

The July Memorial stands near the centre of the park. Its paved surroundings feature steel plates engraved with the names of those killed during the July uprising. Images depicting different moments of the July movement have also been permanently installed inside the memorial’s railings. Several symbolic graves have been placed directly in front of the memorial, with a walking path running alongside them.

Those involved in the project believe the memorial will play an important role in conveying the significance of the 2024 mass uprising to future generations.

Additional fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal trees have been planted to make the park greener. The renovated space has been designed to provide city residents with a suitable environment for regular walks and relaxation. The park’s old lake has also been refurbished and given a new look.
