Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour will leave CNN in June 2027, ending a 43-year career with the international news network, she announced on Monday.

Amanpour, 68, is CNN’s chief international anchor and has been one of the network’s most prominent journalists, covering major global conflicts and interviewing world leaders throughout her career.

In a statement, she said she had made the decision after months of consideration. She also expressed gratitude to her colleagues and field crews, highlighting their collective efforts to report facts and human stories from around the world.

Amanpour began her career at CNN in 1983 as an assistant on the international assignment desk. Her first major assignment was covering the 1990–91 Gulf War.

She subsequently reported on conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran.

She has hosted CNN International’s flagship programme, Amanpour, since 2009. Beginning in January 2027, the programme will move to a weekly format before ending in May.

She will continue reporting and travelling on assignments for CNN through June, when she is scheduled to leave the network.

Her PBS programme, Amanpour & Company, will also end in December 2026. However, she plans to continue co-hosting the podcast The Ex Files with her former husband, Jamie Rubin, a former US diplomat, and pursue new projects.

CNN chairman and chief executive Mark Thompson informed staff of her decision in an internal memo, praising her contribution to the network and describing her departure as the end of an important chapter.

Amanpour’s exit comes as CNN enters a new phase following the acquisition of its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, by Paramount Skydance.

However, she has not identified the ownership change as the reason for her departure.

In her statement, Amanpour said she would continue supporting CNN’s tradition of independent journalism and urged journalists to remain committed to truth and factual reporting.

Her departure will mark the end of one of the longest careers among CNN’s leading international journalists.
