Three U.S. news organizations—CNN, Politico and MS NOW—have announced plans to sue the administration of President Donald Trump after their journalists were barred from entering the White House.
Last Friday, Trump announced restrictions against the three news organizations, accusing them of publishing “fabricated” or “false” reports about his administration.
The following day, journalists from the organizations were denied entry when they attempted to access the White House. Their press credentials were also confiscated.
In a joint statement on Monday, CNN, Politico and MS NOW said they were taking legal action to defend their “First Amendment rights” and to establish that the government cannot dictate what the press publishes or how it reports the news.
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of the press and prohibits the government from abridging that freedom. Courts have traditionally interpreted the provision as preventing the government from discriminating against news organizations based on the content of their reporting or their criticism of the government.
The three organizations also said the White House revoked their journalists’ press credentials without notice or legal process because the administration objected to their reporting.
