Thirty Bangladeshi nationals released from an immigration detention centre in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, returned home on Tuesday.
They arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 12:15pm on a Thai Airways flight, TG-321.
The workers had travelled to Cambodia in search of jobs but became trapped in various scam centres across the country.
The Cambodian government later offered an opportunity for undocumented foreigners to return home without paying fines. The Bangladeshis registered their names to avail themselves of the offer.
Accordingly, they arrived at Phnom Penh airport on September 3. However, immigration police detained 32 Bangladeshis during immigration checks over their irregular status and other complications.
Although two of them were subsequently released, the remaining 30 were held at the country’s immigration detention centre.
Following an application by Anirban Survivor Voice Foundation, the labour wing of the Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok was asked to take the necessary steps to secure their release and arrange their swift return home.
After completing the necessary procedures in phases, all 30 Bangladeshis returned to the country on Tuesday.
