DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has detained 84 men and women during a drug raid at a house rented out by Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdullah Al Zaher in the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area. Of those detained, 58 are young men and 26 are young women. Following the incident, Zaher has been withdrawn from his post.

The information was announced in an office order issued by Police Headquarters on Tuesday afternoon (October 20).

According to police sources, the DB launched the raid on Monday night at a two-and-a-half-storey building beside a police outpost in the POHS-1 Housing area of Bashundhara Residential Area under Vatara Police Station. The operation continued until noon on Tuesday.

Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the development.

He said the house belonged to Additional DIG Abdullah Al Zaher of Police Headquarters, who had rented it out through Airbnb. Illegal drug consumption and DJ parties were being organised there, he added. Narcotics were recovered during the raid.

One Afghan national was also among those detained. Legal action is being taken in connection with the incident, he said.

According to reports, the raid began around midnight on Monday (October 19). However, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has yet to provide details about the legal action being taken against the detainees or the type and quantity of synthetic drugs seized.
