Dhaka: BNP leaders and activists should remain alert to possible attempts to create divisions within the party and provoke unrest ahead of local government elections, Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Zahid Uddin Swapon has said.

Speaking at several BNP worker meetings in unions across Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas of Barishal over the past few days, Swapon alleged that “fascists who fled and the clandestine group” would conspire against the BNP and fuel internal rivalries. He urged party members not to fall into anyone’s trap.

The meetings were attended by leaders of the upazila and union BNP units. Barishal North District BNP Member Secretary Mezanur Rahman Khan Mukul was also present as a special guest.

Swapon said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had informed the nation that intelligence reports pointed to attempts to create disorder in the country. He also referred to the prime minister’s remarks about efforts to stir labour unrest at factories in several locations.

Calling on BNP members to build “steel-hard unity,” Swapon said they should ensure that the local government elections were not used to weaken the party or obstruct development work.
